Streamflow Situation from the network of river monitoring gauges of the US Geological Survey in Georgia

Below normal to much below normal streamflows dominate the Georgia current streamflow dashboard Tuesday morning ahead of an epic rain event promising to bring flooding to the north and north Atlanta metro area this afternoon into Thursday.

Normal rated flows are recorded on the Chattachoochee River downstream of Buford Dam-Lake Lanier this hour. The US Army Corps of Engineers reports the morning release of water from Buford Dam has passed as of 810 am. Another release is scheduled for 555 pm to 9 pm tonight. Be advised that conditions on the Chattahoochee River below Buford Dam become dangerous during the release of excess water from Lake Lanier. This is all the more concerning during a major rain event. It is important to know the timing of the water release, as the USACE warns, "it can be a life or death situation. When you hear the warning sirens sounded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at Lake Lanier, it can be too late to react."

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Wilkes County: City of Washington Boil issued a city wide BWA last week Thursday following repair of a significant water leak on Highway 44. According to the City, the incident impacted all water customers. The advisory was lifted by Friday, Feb 7 at 1 pm, according to City of Washington staff.

Washington serves 6490 residents from surface water in Savannah River watershed. From the Annual Water Quality Report 2022, "The City of Washington has two surface water plants. The Aonia Water Treatment Plant, located 7 miles east of Washington on Highway 78, uses as its source Clarks Hill Reservoir. Water from the reservoir is pumped approximately 6 miles to the plant. The Aonia Plant is capable of treating 2 million gallons per day (MGD). The Skull Shoals Water Treatment Plant is located on N, 2 miles west of the city. Its sources are Lake Boline and Lake Wall. This plant is capable of treating 2 MGD." WTGA.us notes the clean US EPA compliance record, no violations identified in the last three years, up to the last verified reporting period, the quarter ended Sep 30, 2024.

See the front page map for the location of BWAs within the watersheds of Georgia. Enable the watershed layer with directional arrows.

84% of Georgia drinking water facilities have a clean operational record with no current SDWA violations as of the last US EPA verified reporting quarter, ended September 30, 2024.
