Streamflows trending downward, temp trending up!

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in Georgia
Fair, 59 degrees with patchy dense fog in north and central Georgia, the fog will be gone mid-morning as the mercury rises to a gorgeous 79F, clear and sunny day ahead. Warming and fair conditions in the south, 65 degrees heading for a balmy 80 today.

Streamflows have dipped mostly below normal with an increasing number of stations reporting below the 10th percentile Tuesday. North and central Georgia run predominantly below normal with just one watershed, Coosa River and tributaries recording seasonal normal water levels. Heading downstream on both sides of the divide, below normal ratings are becoming more common. To the drought map, that clear spot up in the northwest remains, Coosa River watershed is unrated on the drought map again Tuesday, the only watershed of north Georgia not experiencing below normal moisture, as mentioned earlier in the current streamflow report. Chattahoochee River watershed is rated below normal, starting from the top of the drainage area Lumpkin, White and Habersham Counties, downstream south to northwest Muscogee County. Tallapoosa River watershed is rated moderate drought, impacting Haralson and Carroll Counties. Downstream, southward in the Gulf drainage basin, Flint River watershed remains below normal from Early to Seminole Counties.

For the Atlantic Ocean drainage basin, Upper Savannah River and Upper Oconee River watersheds remain below normal. Lower Ocmulgee River watershed has popped up on the drought map overnight, replacing the lower Oconee rated below normal from Peach to south Wheeler County, Altamaha River picks it up from here, running below normal from Appling County out to the coast at Glynn County. Lower Oconee has exited the drought map overnight. There are no floodings or high flows, one extreme low flow continues in the Ocmulgee River watershed. See the front page map for low flow details, the tag is red-brown.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Wilcox County: Rochelle issued a boil water advisory following a power outage last week. All connections impacted by the loss of pressure were under the mandatory BWA Friday and Saturday.

Rochelle provides potable water for a population of 1712 from a groundwater source in the upper Suwanee River watershed, part of the Gulf of Mexico drainage basin in southern Georgia. The Rochelle water treatment plant was last inspected Oct 2022, the reporting and monitoring records show minor deficiencies in data verification, finished water storage, source and treatment. Recommendations were made at the last complete sanitary survey inspection for management-operation and pumps. The US EPA notes non-compliance with the Consumer Confidence Rule for each of the last twelve quarters.

The WTGA.us Serious Violator List is out, showing 84% of Georgia drinking water facilities have a clean operational record with no current SDWA violations as of the last US EPA audited reporting quarter, ended September 30, 2024.

See the WTGA.us Jan 2025 Serious Violator List, here.

Contaminants can enter the water lines during power outages, water line breaks or any time the pressure falls below 20 psi. Residents can practise safe water hygiene by following the precautionary measures. When water has been restored after an outage, allow a tap to run for a few minutes. You can collect this water in a container for landscape application. After the stagnant water has been cleared from the lines, bring the next measure of water obtained from the taps to a rolling boil, maintaining the boil for one minute to sanitize any contamination that may have entered the lines with a water main break and repair. Watch for local water facility announcements to confirm when the water has been lab tested and potable, meaning safe to drink straight from the tap again.
