Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in Georgia
According to the NWS local forecast office at Charleston SC, parts of southern Georgia are under cover of dense fog until mid-afternoon. Coastal Bryan-Coastal Chatham-Coastal Liberty-Coastal McIntosh Counties are experiencing hazardous driving conditions, the dense fog reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile, expected to last until 3 pm.
It is fair and 47 in central Georgia, heading for a mostly sunny day with a high of 72. Streamflows in the mid Chattahoochee River watershed run below the 10th percentile Monday. Northern Georgia flows run normal to below normal on both sides of the drainage divide, the trend toward more seasonal normal ratings moving south, both sides of the drainage divide. A first percentile, extreme low water level continues near Macon on lower Tobesofkee Creek, below the Tobesofkee Dam. The drought map has cleared a swath down the center of Georgia running along the height of land divide from the Upper Chattahoochee River watershed to the upper Flint and Upper Ocmulgee River watersheds, these adjacent drainage areas either side of the height-of-land divide are no longer rated below normal. In the Atlantic Ocean drainage basin, the Upper Savannah River watershed has stepped down from moderate drought to below normal, from Rabun to central Screven. The Oconee and Altamaha River watersheds remains below normal from the top of the Oconee drainage area in Hall County down to the Altamaha River outlet at the Glynn-McIntosh Counties. Lower Flint River watershed remains below normal in the south Gulf drainage area.
Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Wilcox County: Rochelle issued a boil water advisory following a power outage Thursday afternoon. A defective transformer at the well site had been giving trouble over the last few weeks. Georgia Power installed anew transformer, Rochelle water service restored later the same day. All connections impacted by the loss of pressure were under the mandatory BWA Friday and Saturday.
Rochelle provides potable water for a population of 1712 from a groundwater source in the upper Suwanee River watershed, part of the Gulf of Mexico drainage basin in southern Georgia. The Rochelle water treatment plant was last inspected Oct 2022, the reporting and monitoring records show minor deficiencies in data verification, finished water storage, source and treatment. Recommendations were made at the last complete sanitary survey inspection for management-operation and pumps. The US EPA notes non-compliance with the Consumer Confidence Rule for each of the last twelve quarters.
The WTGA.us Serious Violator List is out, showing 84% of Georgia drinking water facilities have a clean operational record with no current SDWA violations as of the last US EPA audited reporting quarter, ended September 30, 2024.
See the WTGA.us Jan 2025 Serious Violator List, here.
Contaminants can enter the water lines during power outages, water line breaks or any time the pressure falls below 20 psi. Residents can practise safe water hygiene by following the pre-cautionary measures. When water has been restored after an outage, allow a tap to run for a few minutes. You can collect this water in a container for landscape application. After the stagnant water has been cleared from the lines, bring the next measure of water obtained from the taps to a rolling boil, maintaining the boil for one minute to sanitize any contamination that may have entered the lines with a water main break and repair. Watch for local water facility announcements to confirm when the water has been lab tested and potable, meaning safe to drink straight from the tap again.
Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by NWS Peachtree City 414 am EST Mon Feb 3
Patchy dense fog across portions of Central Georgia overnight will have burned off by mid-morning.
