Marietta utilities crews carry out emergency water line repair, BWA issued

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Cobb County: Marietta Board of Lights and Water issued a BWA Tuesday for some water customers on Caro Lane following emergency repairs to the water line. Marietta Water distributes potable water to 60,100 customers from surface water treated and supplied by Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA). Raw water from the Chattahoochee River is piped in to the James E. Quarles Treatment Facility, from there the potable water is distributed to east Cobb County, including Marietta. The Hugh A. Wyckoff Treatment Facility is supplied with raw water from Lake Allatoona, the treated water is distributed to customers north and west in Cobb County, also to parts of Marietta. Both Marietta Board of Lights and Water and the Cobb County treatment plants have exemplary records with the US EPA for Safe Drinking Water Act Compliance, as of the last data refresh, January 11, 2025.

Hancock County: City of Sparta issued a BWA on the weekend following a number of water main breaks caused by the cold weather. The City of Sparta water system issued a BWA "due to issues caused by winter storm Enzo and the subsequent low temperatures." The following is an excerpt from the City of Sparta news release:
"We have experienced an increase in water leaks, which may be disrupting your water supply or causing water pressure in parts of the water system to drop to very low levels. The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution – there is the potential a health hazard may exist due to microbial contamination in these areas without positive pressure.

In order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, customers that have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking, or preparing food."

City of Sparta provides potable water for 3354 residents plus businesses, raw water is sourced from Lake Sinclair in the Oconee River watershed.

EPA has released new quarterly report on drinking water facilities compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Of the 2376 licensed and active drinking water facilities serving in Georgia, twenty-eight have significant violations in the latest quarter. See the prior quarterly report, how Georgia's drinking water facilities stack up against those in Ohio, New York, Louisiana and California, here.
