Severe freeze event cast Sparta into a boil water situation

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Hancock County: Sparta residents found themselves under a BWA on the weekend after the extreme cold weather Friday burst water lines and drained the water supply. Sparta Police issued an announcement via social media Friday night advising residents without water that the boil order will apply after city crews repair the damage and restore water service. Sparta provides potable water for 3354 residents plus businesses, from Lake Sinclair, a surface water source in the Oconee River watershed.

Sinclair Dam impounds the Oconee River to form Lake Sinclair, the source of raw water for Sparta and several other municipalities. Sparta water facility was last inspected by the state in March 2022. Minor deficiencies were noted, including in distribution, finished water storage and pumps. Recommendations were made at that time for data verification and source. EPA records no serious violations of the SDWA in the last twelve quarters. In three of the last twelve quarters, there are non-compliance issues related to surface water treatment rule and public notice rule.

EPA has released new quarterly report on drinking water facilities compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Of the 2376 licensed and active drinking water facilities serving in Georgia, twenty-eight have significant violations in the latest quarter. See the prior quarterly report, how Georgia's drinking water facilities stack up against those in Ohio, New York, Louisiana and California, here.
