NWS: "Unusually long period of bitterly cold weather" and impact on drinking water infrastructure
As NWS warns of an "unusually long period of bitterly cold weather", WTGA.us watches for damage to drinking water infrastructure. Water main breaks related to the cold conditions force boil water orders. Watch for the yellow tags on the front page map. It is well below freezing in the north, twenty degrees the current temp at Warner Robins Air Force Base, heading for a high just above freezing, 35 degrees. See the special weather statement on the condition of roadways. Savannah area remains under a cold weather advisory until 10 am tomorrow, Thursday. Southern Georgia weather this hour, freezing, 28 degrees, the daytime high just 36 degrees.

ICY ROADS EXPECTED THIS MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON IN PORTIONS
OF NORTH GEORGIA...
Below freezing temperatures have lead to slick spots and patches
of black ice on the roadways this morning. Use extra caution while
driving and slow down to reduce your risk. Conditions should
gradually improve as temperatures slowly rise above freezing this
afternoon. Heed any messages from local officials on road closures.

COLD WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EST
THURSDAY...
Very cold wind chills 13 to 18 degrees early this morning and 10 to 15 degrees above zero tonight in portions of southeast Georgia and southeast South Carolina until 10 AM EST Thursday. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. Wind chill values can lead to
hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
This will be an unusually long period of bitterly cold weather. Daytime highs will only warm into the mid
30s today with overnight lows dropping into the teens to lower 20s tonight. Be sure to take protective actions to prepare both your home and business as well as yourself for this period of very cold
weather.
Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a
hat, and gloves. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure
portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills indoors.

HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS EXPECTED THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON...
Even though wintry precipitation has ended and sunshine has returned, temperatures today will only peak just above freezing so widespread significant melting is not anticipated. Area roadways, including interstates and highways, will likely remain snow and ice covered through the day. Hazardous travel conditions will persist on bridges and overpasses, primary and secondary roads, parking lots, sidewalks and driveways.
If you plan to drive or walk, remain alert for black ice. Slow your driving speed and use care when walking on sidewalks, driveways or parking lots. Slips and falls constitute a leading cause of injuries during winter weather.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Glynn County: City of Brunswick issued a BWA following repairs made Saturday. The BWA is precautionary and applies to water customers connecting on Marshview Circle, until the lab tests confirm the water is free of contamination. City of Brunswick water system serves a population over forty thousand customers from a groundwater source in the Satilla River watershed.
Walker County: LaFayette residences and businesses served by the Lee School Rd water treatment plant remain under BWA for turbidity, a high degree of suspended particles that make the water cloudy. Customers connected to Lee School Rd water plant, one of two treatment plants operated by Lafayette Water, include those connecting east of Highway 27 bypass, South of 136 East, including the Naomi community, Highway 151, Corinth area, Hillcrest community, Walnut grove area and customers along the Old Trion Highway.
Lafayette provides drinking water to 18177 residential customers from a surface water source purchased from another licensed drinking water facility in the Coosa River watershed. The Lee School Road water treatment plant is one of two water treatment plants serving Lafayette area.
EPA has released new quarterly report on drinking water facilities compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Of the 2376 licensed and active drinking water facilities serving in Georgia, twenty-eight have significant violations in the latest quarter. See the prior quarterly report, how Georgia's drinking water facilities stack up against those in Ohio, New York, Louisiana and California, here.
