Dekalb County Water customers under BWA, NWS issues high fire danger statement

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
DeKalb County: A significant area of Dekalb County remains under a boil water advisory following a water main break yesterday. Residents connected to City of Atlanta Water are not impacted by this incident.

Dekalb County Water's latest press release "Update 9:05 p.m. (Jan 15) DeKalb Crews Continue Repairs to Broken Water Main on Clairmont Road" states "crews continuing work to repair the 30” broken water main at 3661 Clairmont Road." The work carried on overnight last night with the BWA in place until further notice.

Bottled water is still available at the following distribution centers:
  • Fire Station 1 – 1670 Clifton Rd.
  • Fire Station 3 – 24 N. Clarendon Ave.
  • Fire Station 7 – 1712 Columbia Dr.
  • Fire Station 9 – 3858 N. Druid Hills Rd.
  • Fire Station 20 – 2919 Warren Rd.
  • RaceTrac – 3630 Clairmont Rd.
A detour remains in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and expect delays. Dekalb County Water serves 743,000 customers from a raw water intake on the Chattahoochee River, alternate supply is purchased from Gwinnett County and Atlanta in the Chattahoochee River watershed.

Walker County: LaFayette issued another BWA for high particulate matter coming out of the Lee School Road water treatment plant. Turbidity was at the root of a previous BWA announcement this month. Rate payers connected to the Lee School Road treatment plant are advised to vigorously boil their drinking and hygiene water for at least one minute, to sanitize any microbiological contamination carried along on the suspended particulates. The area impacted by the order includes those east of Highway 27 bypass, South of 136 East, including the Naomi community, Highway 151, Corinth area, Hillcrest community, Walnut grove area, Old Trion Highway. Lafayette provides drinking water to 18177 residential customers from a surface water source, purchased from another licensed drinking water facility in the Coosa River watershed. The Lee School Road water treatment plant is one of two water treatment plants serving Lafayette area.

Chatham County: Savannah issued a BWA after line repairs made near DeRenne Ave and Reynolds St on Sunday. This precautionary BWA applied to customers connecting south of DeRenne Avenue between Habersham and Paulsen Streets. Savannah Main water district serves 169 thousand customers from a groundwater source.

Streamflow Situation from the network of river monitors of the USGS throughout the watersheds of Georgia
Water levels continue below normal to normal through the north and central Georgia watersheds on both sides of the drainage divide. Normal water levels are observed in the south with one station reported below normal in the lower Flint River watershed. The drought map has taken on area in the northern ranges, Tennessee River watershed east and west sections near the north state line are rated below normal, including Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Fannin, Union and Towns Counties. Also on the Gulf of Mexico basin side of the divide, lower Flint River watershed remains below normal on the drought map from Early County through Miller and Seminole Counties. Over the divide to the Atlantic basin, St. Mary's River watershed is still counted below normal, impacting Charlton County. Drought ratings come from the 7-day average streamflows below the historic average for this time of year. No flooding or high flows or first percentile low flows are recorded at this time, an extreme low flow is recorded in Tobesofkee Creek near Macon.

It is 45 degrees at Warner Robins Air Force Base, a bit warmer today, high 61 with a high fire danger statement in effect, see below. Fair and sunny, 47 degrees at Hunter US Army Airfield near Savannah, the expected high again today 56 degrees.

Relative humidities at or below 30 percent and westerly wind gusts up to 35 mph can be expected for around 4 hours this afternoon and evening north of Interstate 20. South of Interstate 20 relative humidities below 25 percent and westerly wind gusts near 25 mph are anticipated for around 4 hours this afternoon and evening.

With relatively dry fuels, high fire danger conditions can be expected.
