Lake Tobesofkee Dam

Streamflow Situation from the network of river monitors of the USGS throughout the watersheds of Georgia
Streamflows continue consistently normal statewide on Thursday. An isolated low flow case is recorded for Tobesofkee Creek, currently running 1st percentile downstream of Lake Tobesofkee Dam, aka Fenley Ryther Dam, near Macon.

Built for flood control in 1965, the 54' high earthen dam impounds Tobesofkee Creek, normally storing around 25 thousand acre-feet of water. As Tobesofkee Creek piles up behind the dam, raising the water above the spillway, the overflow is released. At the current flow rate, the dam discharges once a day, raising the water level in the lower creek by three feet, from a low around 2ft to peak flow around 5ft. The monitoring station near Macon records the peak water level for less than an hour before the gauage depth drops back over the next four to five hours, back to the consistent lower flow level. Depending on the time of day, you could find Tobesofkee Creek rising like a flash inside the 20 ft channel. For 19 to 20 hours a day, you would encounter the low flow, as of this report, below 2 ft.

As of this update, we see no active flooding in the reference network, no extreme high flows. See the brown tag on the front page for the location of the Lake Tobesofkee Dam.

Below normal ratings on the drought map are down to two small areas Thursday. On the Gulf of Mexico side of the drainage divide, Flint River watershed remains below normal through the lower channel, from Early County to outlet in Lake Seminole. On the Atlantic side of the height-of-land divide, St. Mary's River watershed, part of the Satilla-Altamaha basin, remains below normal in through Charlton County.

Frosty and sunny, 37 degrees at Warner Robins Air Force Base, high today 55 degrees. It is fair, 52 degrees at Hunter US Army Airfield near Savannah, the Charleston SC local forecast office calling for a sunny Thursday, high 57.
