Low water levels, drought expanding
Streamflow Situation from the network of river monitors of the USGS throughout the watersheds of Georgia
Overcast, 48 degrees at Warner Robins Air Force Base, on the way to a cloudy Boxing Day, high 53. Overcast and 51 at Savannah's Hunter US Army Airfield. A 20% chance of showers in the south today during the noon hour until mid afternoon, high today 54 degrees.
Widespread below normal streamflows througout the north are beginning to show up on the drought map. Moderate drought has taken hold in Tallapoosa River watershed, below normal ratings for Tennessee River east and west sections. The Coosa watershed is unrated so far, the below normal streamflows will likely cast all of Coosa River watershed into a below normal rating on the drought map in a day or two. Central and south Georgia are beginning to see the odd monitoring station rated below normal both sides of the divide. Flint River is running below normal in the upper and lower channel, the drought map has already pinned the below normal rating to the lower watershed, Seminole, Miller and Early counties are drawn into this, today joined by adjacent Ochlockonee River watershed, below normal. Chattahoochee River continues to run beow normal and much below seasonal normal downstream of Buford Dam, corresponding area on the drought map rated below normal from the head of the drainage basin in Lumpkin down to Muscogee County. On the Atlantic side of the divide, Altamaha River watershed remains below normal in south Appling County, St Mary's River watershed is below normal through Charlton County. Savannah River is today showing some area in the upper basin below normal. No flooding is observed as of this report, no extreme high or low flows of note in the reference network of streamflow gauges.
