Ocmulgee River flooding at Macon

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in Georgia

Ocmulgee River breached minor flood stage at Macon just after 6 pm last night, currently running at what appears to be the peak flow, three feet over the channel. The water level has stopped rising, provisional data from the sensors does not show declining level yet, more to follow. A tributary of the Flint River, Kinchafoonee Creek began flooding at Preston just after 11 pm last night, the flow peaked just shy of half a foot over minor flood stage, coming down steadily, as of this report four inches over the channel. Flint River itself did flood briefly during the afternoon yesterday near Carsonville, this flooding ended before 5 pm. A handful of sites are still running 99th percentile high flows, though none are close to flooding, water levels for the most part are receding.

Sunny and clear, high 54 at Warner Robins Air Force Base reporting for north and central GA. Charleston SC local forecast office reports very similar outlook, sunny with a high 56, no rain and no hazardous weather alerts for today or tomorrow.

Streamflows continue to record much above normal to high in north and central state, the highest water levels have moved downstream of Atlanta with two sites currently observing flooding, one on each side of the drainage divide. See black tags on the map to the right for observed flood locations in the network, blue tags for 99th percentile high flows.

Drought ratings continue to peel off the state map, the only areas left with a below normal rating Thursday are the Tennessee River west section Dae, Walker and Catoosa Counties, and the lower Oconee River watershed from Baldwin, Wilkinson and Laurens and East Washington.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Forsyth County: Some Cumming area residents came under a BWA this week after a major water main break. Chattahoochee Elementary School (Home of the Champions) was impacted with this order, along with Forsyth County Fire Hall 5 and all other customers connecting on Holtzclaw Road between Pilgrim Mill Road and Holtzclaw Drive. The water main break and BWA extends to all cross streets in the area bound by Chattahoochee Road between Holtzclaw Road and Stone Creek Circle until further notice. Forsyth County Water and Sewer serves 161,200 customers from a surface water source, Lake Lanier, in the Chattahoochee River watershed. Note the recent flooding in this area, including Big Creek was ongoing the same day as the water main break, Dec 10. See yellow tags on the map to the right for the location of the BWA.

Long County: Ludowici Water System remains under BWA today and tomorrow while scheduled work is completed on the installation of new water lines. Ludowici Water System serves a population of 1651 from a groundwater source in the Altamaha River watershed. See the yellow tag on the map to the right for the location of the Ludowici water treatment facility, enable the watershed layer with directional arrows to understand the impact zone for source water contamination events such as hazardous materials spills and floods, marked on the map as they occur from time to time.
