Flooding GA-9 northeast of Atlanta

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in Georgia
Light drizzle, 60 degrees at Warner Robins Air Force Base this hour with the USGS streamflow gauges still lit up with 99th percentile extreme high flows north and south of Atlanta. Showers from earlier this morning have tapered off by this report to a cloudy day with gradual clearing, the temp dropping to around 48 by the evening commute. Northwest wind could gust as high as 30 mph.

Streamflows run much above normal to high in north and central Georgia, one site recording above flood stage, Big Creek got out of the channel around 645 am at GA-9 near Cummings, northeast of Atlanta. Chattahoochee River and tributaries are running at extreme high levels in the uper channel above Atlanta. The entire north and central state are running in the top ten percent of high water levels for this date, giving way to seasonal normal readings in the southeast, at the lower end of the Atlantic drainage basin. The high streamflows above will shift these values in the south later today as the high water moves through. See black tags for flood, blue tags for 99th percentile high flows.

Drought ratings are clearing off as the rain falls, the 7-day average streamflows of the past week compared with historic average plot watershed areas below normal and assess degrees of hydrologic drought. As of this report, the Chattahoochee River watershed has cleared the drought map, no longer rated below normal as the high water level over the last 24 hours shifts the 7-day average enough to shake off the drought status. In reality, this looks like a lot of moisture running over the landscape, soaking into the fields and filling the ponds and water bodies. Upper Savannah and Upper Oconee River watersheds remain below normal, the northwest area is holding on to below normal rating through the Tennessee River watershed west portion, the lower Coosa and Tallapoosa River watersheds.

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 446 am Wed Dec 11 by NWS Peachtree City
The threat for localized flooding has largely diminished. Isolated thunderstorms capable of gusty winds will be possible this morning across east central Georgia, well south of the Interstate 20 corridor. Gusty conditions are expected this afternoon and evening, with northwest winds approaching 20 mph and gusts of 25 to 30 mph. With recent rainfall and saturated soils, trees may be more prone to falling.

Safe Drinking Water Act
Long County: Ludowici Water System remains under BWA all this week while new water lines are installed. Ludowici Water System serves a population of 1651 from a groundwater source in the Altamaha River watershed. See the yellow tag on the map to the right for the location of the Ludowici water treatment facility, enable the watershed layer with directional arrows to understand the impact zone for source water contamination events such as hazardous materials spills and floods, marked on the map as they occur from time to time.

During a Boil Water Advisory, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that boiled tap water or bottled water be used for the following:
  • Drinking
  • Washing dishes
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Washing or preparing food
  • Washing your hands
  • Making ice
  • Making baby formula
