Kristy becomes Category 5 storm
Rockdale County Biolab Fire Update October 2024
Shelter in place order was rescinded October 17, 2024.
Clean-up continues.
Incident Overview: At approximately 5:30 am on Sunday, September 29, 2024 Rockdale
County Fire Rescue responded to a roof fire at Biolab in Conyers, GA.
The building at Biolab contained Chlorine compounds and is a water
reactive chemical. Resulting in a plume. Rockdale County and Emergency
response agencies from across the state responded to assist, including
Environmental Protection Agency, The Environmental Protection Division,
Georgia Emergency Management and local first responders from
neighboring counties.
The chemicals detected by EPA air monitoring include:
- Chlorine, chloramine and chlorine compounds
- Carbon Monoxide
- Hydrogen Chloride
- Phosgene

Pacific Ocean - Hurricane Kristy Advisory Number 13 issued by National Hurricane Center 2 pm Oct 24
KRISTY BECOMES A CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE
At 200 PM PDT (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Kristy was located
near latitude 14.2 North, longitude 121.6 West. Kristy is moving
toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h) and this motion is expected to
continue through tonight. A turn toward the northwest and then
north-northwest, with a slower forward speed, is expected Friday
through the weekend.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 160 mph (260 km/h)
with higher gusts. Kristy is a category 5 hurricane on the
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity
are expected through tonight, with rapid weakening expected to begin
Friday.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles
(165 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 926 mb (27.35 inches).
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
Swells generated by Kristy will affect portions of the west
coast of the Baja California peninsula late this week and over the
weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and
rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local
weather office.

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS streamflow gauges in Georgia
Clear and sunny with a high of 86 today, according to NWS Peachtree City. No rain or hazardous weather in the forecast. Normal streamflows predominate through most of the state, the northwest Coosa and Tallapoosa River watersheds continue to experience lower than seasonal water levels in the rivers and creeks flowing toward the Mississippi River. South state runs normal to above seasonal normal flow volumes and gage height, Withlacoochee River is rated much above seasonal normal, above the 90th percentile. Northwest Georgia is rated on the drought map Thursday including the lower Coosa River and Tallapoosa River watershed area of Georgia. Central Walker, Chattooga, west Floyd, west Polk County, Haralson and Carroll Counties are impacted with the below normal moisture conditions.
As of this report there are no hazardous weather expectations, no flooding, no extreme high or extreme low flows.
