East Coast expecting large swells Sunday due to Hurricane Kirk
National Hurricane Center, Miami FL is currently tracking Hurricane Kirk and Tropical Storm Leslie in the North Atlantic, while another low develops in the Gulf of Mexico, potentially developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm today, the likelihood of this one forming within the next 7 days is set at 90%. KIRK REMAINS A POWERFUL MAJOR HURRICANE OVER THE OPEN ATLANTIC...maximum sustained winds of 125 mph, LARGE SWELLS FROM KIRK EXPECTED TO REACH THE U.S. EAST COAST BY SUNDAY
SURF: Swells generated by Category 3 Hurricane Kirk are affecting the Leeward Islands, Bermuda, and the Greater Antilles. These swells are expected to spread westward to the east coast of the United States, Atlantic Canada, and the Bahamas Saturday night and Sunday, and to the Azores on Monday. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Interests in the Azores should monitor the progress of Kirk.
North Atlantic Hurricane Season runs June 1 to November 30. NOAA forecast an above average year, this is certainly proving out in the last half of the season with new records set for the highest number of severe storms in a given time period, the latest appearance of a named storm in the east.
