Streamflow Situation
The streamflow dashboard could be changing over the next few days as thunderstorms enter the region of north and central Georgia. Presently, the north is rated below normal on the drought map in all but the Coosa River watershed through Gilmer, Gordon and north Floyd Counties. All other surface area is accounted for at below normal, the Tennessee River watershed areas east and west, the Upper Chattahoochee and Upper Flint River watersheds coming on today and Upper Savannah River watershed below normal rated area now stretching down into Screven County. Rabun County is still experiencing severe drought at Sky Valley along the North Carolina border, shifting to moderate drought from south Rabun to Hart County. Central Georgia continues to show below normal in the upper Ocmulgee River watershed, the lower Flint and now lower Chattachoochee River watershed, below normal ratings from Clay through Seminole Counties.

WT HAB Tracker
from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS), Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) and State sources where available

A program for the advanced detection and monitoring of HABs in the USA is a collaborative effort by a number of national entities including NOAA, NASA, CDC and others. The focused effort of these agencies has accelerated the development of technologies for sensing and monitoring the harmful blooms, leading to better understanding of their growth, movement and potential toxicity. With careful monitoring and knowledge transfer to and from the local experts, negative health effects can be minimized for wildlife and human populations. According to the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science forecasting program information on line, "We have now reached a point in several regions where the understanding of these blooms is mature enough to put into place the detection and monitoring tools, and to bring these systems into an operational capacity." The benefits of these efforts to study and comprehend the impact and risk of cyanotoxins leads to better drinking water treatment and increased safety in consumption of fish and shellfish and in the enjoyment of recreational water bodies and beaches.

Georgia
Cyanobacteria cell counts detected by US EPA Cyanobacterial Assessment Network (CyAN) have been accessed for a number of Georgia lakes including Jackson Lake, Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell. With very few anecdotal reports of HAB poisonings and extremely rare official reports of HABs, Georgia was not highlighted as a priority for early implementation of the HAB assessment program. As the system is rolled out over the next decade, Georgia too will have support to safeguard drinking water quality, public and environmental health. More to follow as we work through the collection of archived data from CyAN, getting familiar with the HAB history in specific water bodies in Georgia. See the Georgia water bodies list with cell counts here.
