Suwannee, St. Marys and Satilla Rivers flooding update

Flood update from the network of streamflow monitors of the USGS Georgia Water Science Center
Twenty-seven USGS streamflow monitors are recording active flooding in the USA Monday evening with the same three major rivers overloaded and overflowing in Atkinson, Charlton and Clinch Counties.

Satilla River runs just over a foot beyond minor flood stage in Atkinson County, the receding water trend is slowing down, just four inches decline over the last 24 hours. This site may still be flooding until Thursday this week, even with no further provocation from rainfall. St Mary's River has declined almost a foot over the last 24 hours, currently running a foot and nine inches over the channel at Ferry Landing near Folkston in Charlton County. This flooding looks like it could be over on Wednesday. Next door in Clinch County, the Suwannee River runs four inches above flood stage at US 441 near Fargo, still declining slowly, approximately four inches per 24 hours. As reported yesterday, we still expect to see this river back in the channel Tuesday evening, if it doesn't rain.

As the flooded areas dry out, private wells can be sanitized, see this advice from Georgia Coastal Health on how to get your private well disinfected here.

Safe Drinking Water Act
Flood events bring up a number of tactical issues for the management of drinking water. In our quest to learn more about drinking water quality monitoring in Georgia, Coastal Health spokesperson Ginger Heidel refers us to Georgia Environmental Protection Division as the State authorities responsible for monitoring drinking water facilities compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and any State compliance requirements above and beyond the SDWA minimum national standard. Inquiries have been sent to EPD regarding routine testing of raw water sources for microbiological contamination, including sampling for cyanotoxins in Georgia. More to follow.
