NWS: Strong to severe storms, slight risk of large hail

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 406 am Aug 18 by NWS Peachtree City
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible across a majority of the state. Some storms may become strong to severe, especially south of Interstate 20, and capable of producing damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail in addition to frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall. A Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) is in effect for portions of central and south central Georgia.

The probability for widespread hazardous weather is low. Isolated thunderstorms are possible each afternoon from Thursday through Saturday across south central Georgia.

Spotter activation is not requested but spotters are encouraged to submit reports of severe weather through the web by going to weather.gov/atlanta. Please relay any information about observed severe weather to the NWS while following all local, state, and CDC guidelines.

Flood update from the network of streamflow monitors of the USGS Georgia Water Science Center
Thirty-one USGS streamflow monitors are recording active flooding in the USA Sunday with three reference locations remaining above flood stage in Georgia. The monitored sites offer a view on flow trends nearby in the same watershed or drainage area. While the full extent of area flooded is not estimated by these sensors, it is helpful to keep track of the volume and gauge height trends in the flooding watersheds.

Flooding has ceased in Chatham County, the sensors indicate Ogeechee River got under control last night around 5 pm, currently flowing seven to eight inches inside the channel bounds near Eden. Satilla River is still flooding in Atkinson County, running a foot and 9 inches over the channel at the monitor site. St Mary's River ceased flooding near MacClenny, FL around 330 am this morning, still flooding in Charlton County at Ferry Landing near Folkston, three feet above minor flood stage there. Clinch County flooding continues, the Suwannee River measured nine inches over the channel at US 441 near Fargo, this flow is on a slow steady decline approximately four inches per 24 hours, expect to see this flood end Tuesday if it doesn't rain.

As the flooded areas dry out, private wells can be sanitized, see this advice from Georgia Coastal Health on how to get your private well disinfected here.
