NWS: High fire danger, high heat index

June 26, 2024 1047 am EDT

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by NWS Peachtree City 555 am Wednesday June 26

Very hot temperatures are expected this afternoon, with highs rising into the upper 90s to low 100s. High fire danger conditions are expected this afternoon into the evening for portions of north and central Georgia due to low relative humidities. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be possible across portions of north Georgia tonight.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected over much of the area each day from Thursday through next Tuesday. Storms that develop will be capable of producing lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds. Extreme heat will also be possible across much of the area through next Tuesday with heat index values around or above 100 each afternoon. Heat index values will be highest Friday through Sunday, possibly exceeding 105 in the in central Georgia and portions of north Georgia during those afternoons.

From The Sensors provisional data on river flooding from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Seventy-three streamflow gauges indicate flooding in the USA Wednesday, down from seventy-four Tuesday. The majority of these floods are occurring in Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Nebraska. Within the WT coverage area New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana, one last location records flow above flood stage, that being on Sabine River in Louisiana.

Louisiana: Region 4 border river Sabine continues to run over flood stage in the lower channel near the outlet in Gulf of Mexico. Flow recorded near Ruliff, TX has not changed in the last two days, still showing provisional reading of seven inches above the channel. Provisional reading to be confirmed, more to follow. Water level at the flood site and flow volume are updated daily, see the black tag here.

Drinking Water Advisories
Stephens County: Martin - under a BWA Sunday following discovery of a main line leak on Hurricane Grove Road. Martin serves a population of 1703 through 655 residential connections, the raw water is sourced from groundwater wells.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
