Moderate drought hits central Burke, Screven

June 18, 2024 10 am EDT

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 444 am June 18 from National Weather Service forecast center in Peachtree City

Despite heat indices near the actual temperature today, continue to take precautions to ensure adequate hydration and access to cooling.

After a period of dry weather, isolated thunderstorms will be possible Friday and into the weekend, mainly in the afternoon and evening. Some storms could be strong with lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds. Heat indices ranging from 96 to 102 are likely to return this weekend.

Current Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges through Georgia

Below normal ratings continue to dominate the streamflow map Tuesday as National Weather Service indicates a dry week ahead. Coosa River watershed tributaries had some above normal flows over last few days, now running below normal for the most part. One extreme low flow holds on in Chattahoochee River near Columbia, AL at 1st percentile. This is the only extreme low as of reporting time. Ocmulgee River watershed has picked up the below normal drought rating in the upper basin from Gwinnett County down to Bibb County. Chattahoochee River watershed remains below normal from Muscogee to Clay County with adjacent Flint River continuing below normal in the upper basin from Fulton to Taylor County. On the Atlantic side, Satilla and Savannah River watersheds have area rated below normal. For details on the areas impacted with drought ratings, click here.

WT USA Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Twenty-three streamflow gauges record flows above flood stage in the US Tuesday, the same as yesterday. WT USA tracks the flow levels on three of these reference flood events, all occurring in the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana: Bayou Bodcau Lake continues to flood the basin near Shreveport in Region 1, now two feet ten inches above minor flood stage. In Region 4, west boundary river Sabine water level is up four inches overnight near Logansport, currently recorded a foot and eight inches over minor flood stage. Flow volume has been increasing here the last few days, from 23000 cubic feet per second Sunday to 26000 cfs Monday to now more than 27000 Tuesday. Downstream to the station near Ruliff, the Sabine River runs a foot and four inches over the channel, also at 27000 cfs. For more info on the flooding in Louisiana, see black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height updated daily here.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
