Isolated thunderstorms in the northeast

June 17, 2024 1131 am EDT

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 415 am June 17 from National Weather Service forecast center in Peachtree City

Isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening across the northeast Georgia mountains. Widespread severe weather is unlikely. Hot weather continues today, with heat index values expected to reach 92 and 97 degrees in the afternoon. Precautions should be taken to ensure adequate hydration and access to cooling.

Current Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges through Georgia
Below normal ratings dominate the streamflow map Monday. Coosa River watershed still takes the highest flow in the state, a single station recording 91st percentile values near Hinton. Chattahoochee River runs 91st percentile above Roswell due to releases from Lake Lanier, not for excess rain run-off. The lowest flows are much below normal through much of central Georgia Monday. Extreme low flow values continue on the Chattahoochee River at Columbus and downstream near Columbia, AL. Ocmulgee River watershed has picked up the below normal drought rating in the upper basin from Gwinnett County down to Bibb County, the lower portion of Ocmulgee River watershed is off the drought map. Chattahoochee River watershed remains below normal from Muscogee to Clay County with adjacent Flint River continuing below normal in the upper basin from Fulton to Taylor County. On the Atlantic side, Satilla and Savannah River watersheds have area rated below normal. For details on the areas impacted with drought ratings, click here.

WT USA Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Twenty-three streamflow gauges record flows above flood stage in the US Monday, down from thirty yesterday. WT USA follows the water levels and volume on three of these reference flood events, all occurring in the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana: West state border Sabine River flooding near Bon Wier ended yesterday afternoon. Upstream near Logansport the flow is up overnight, currently recorded a foot and four inches over minor flood stage at increased flow volume, from 23000 to now flowing over 26000 cubic feet per second. Near Ruliff the Sabine River a foot and nine inches above the channel flowing 33 thousand cubic feet per second. Region 1 Bayou Bodcau Lake continues to recede, down five inches overnight, currently recorded three feet and an inch above the basin near Shreveport. For more info on the flooding in Louisiana, see black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height updated daily here.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
