June 4, 2024 updated 325 pm EDT

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by National Weather Service, Peachtree City forecast center
512 am Tuesday, June 4

Scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening. Isolated thunderstorms will likely persist into the overnight hours. The potential for severe weather is low, but strong storms with locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning will be possible.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected mainly in the afternoon and evening each day through Friday, as well as on Sunday and Monday, across portions of north and central Georgia. Widespread severe weather is not anticipated at this time.

HABs Tracker
from Georgia Healthy Beaches, Coastal Health
Jekyll Island permanent beach advisories for presumed high bacterial levels remain in effect for Clam Creek Beach and St. Andrews Beach, the latest posted lab results from April 1 indicated below the threshold for bacterial contamination advisory. See the latest advisories and lab test results here.

National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science satellite monitoring program for harmful algal blooms in US water bodies has nine projects underway, providing daily color images interpreting the presence, extent and concentration of HABs in clear conditions with low wind speed. Three of these projects fall in the coverage area of WT USA, including New York's Lake Champlain, Ohio's Lake Erie west basin and Louisiana's southeast including Lake Pontchartrain, Black Bay, Lake Borgne and Chandeleur Sound. Until the NCCOS begins to provide an imaging program covering Georgia State water bodies, we continue to rely on ground observation and public reporting of suspicious algal blooms. Suspicious blooms may appear as spilled paint or grass clippings in the water.

See the HAB Tracker report here for CDC and federal EPA guidance on harmful algal blooms. Email photos of the suspected HAB with geotags to info@wtga.us.

WT USA Flows and Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Fifty-five streamflow gauges indicate flow above flood stage in the USA Tuesday afternoon, up from fifty- two this morning. Louisiana is under a flash flood warning this afternoon with six monitoring stations reporting active flooding.

As northwest Louisiana remains under Flood Watch until tomorrow evening, rounds of thunderstorms and locally heavy rains have inundated the northwest giving rise to the flash flood warning issued 1130 am today. As of this update, Bayou Bodcau Lake has overrun the basin near Shreveport again, flood stage breached around noon on a rapid rising flow trend. The same five stations reported flooding this morning and three non-rated sites indicating extreme high flows are unchanged at this time. Bayou Dorcheat continues flooding near Springhill in watershed Region 1. Watershed Region 4 Sabine River is flooding near Logansport and Ruliff, TX. Calcasieu River is flooding near Glenmora and downstream near Oberlin. See black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height, blue tags for 99th percentile flows updated daily

Drinking Water Matters
Atlanta: Multiple failures of old water mains results in State of Emergency, National Guard deployed.

A little more than a week after the release of US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) national "State of the Infrastructure" report, aging water mains in Atlanta blew guysers into the streets. Three large diameter mains ruptured in different locations on Friday, another blew out on Saturday resulting in the emergency transfer of dialysis patients from an impacted hospital in the downtown core, closure of government offices and businesses, closure of major tourism attractions Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola, cancellation of concerts at State Farm Arean and disruption of potable water service throughout the delivery area. A State of Emergency declared, water supplies deployed to residents from Atlanta Fire Halls. Public works crews have repaired the major ruptures, the BWA presently applied to impacted connections will be rescinded once the lab tests confirm the water supply is safe. US Army Corps of Engineers operates dams, canals and other water conveyance, including pressurized water lines, 12000 miles of conveyance through the nation. WTGA has reached out to the South Atlantic Division of USACE in Atlanta for more information on the drinking water infrastructure for Atlanta, including conveyance from the source, Chattahoochee River. More to follow.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
