NWS: North Georgia strong thunderstorms
Water news for Tuesday, May 7, 2024 update 336 pm EDT
National Weather Service Hazardous Weather outlook issued 405 am EDT May 7
Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, mainly in far north Georgia. A couple of strong or an isolated severe thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. Strong wind gusts, frequent lightning, and small hail would be possible in the strongest storms.
Periods of thunderstorm activity will continue in the region through Friday. The highest risk of severe weather is expected in the region from late Wednesday night through Thursday night. Damaging wind gusts, large hail, and perhaps a brief, isolated tornado threat would be possible during this time.

Current Streamflows, Drought Map provisional data from USGS streamflow gauges in Georgia
Normal streamflows register through north Georgia Tuesday, mainly normal levels with two low flows registering in central and south Georgia. On the Gulf of Mexico side of the divide, Chattahoochee River watershed recorded above seasonal normal flows yesterday, this water now stored through the impoundments for controlled release. Two low flows are recorded on Chattahoochee River by mid afternoon, at 14th St Columbus, and closer to the outlet end of the channel near Columbia, AL. Area cleared from the drought map Tuesday includes the Tennessee River and Tallapoosa River watersheds, Part of Coosa River watershed remains at the below normal rating in the north. The majority of Flint River watershed remains below normal. On the Atlantic side of the drainage divide, Ocmulgee River watershed remains below normal with the Brier Creek channel rated below normal in Ogeechee/Savannah River watershed.
WT USA Flows and Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors
Seventy-three streamflow gauges record flooding in the USA Tuesday, down from seventy-eight Monday. WT tracks the nation's most common natural disaster dynamics through the states of New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana. As of this report, we are watching seven active flooding events recorded on the network, all in Louisiana.
Louisiana watershed Region 1 flooding in the northwest involves the Bayou Dorcheat, running ten inches over flood stage near Springhill in Webster Parish. Bayou Bodcau continues to flood six feet four inches over the basin near Shreveport in Bossier Parish. Region 4 watershed Sabine River continues to flood from the mid-channel station near Burkeville. Flooding is recorded on Sabine River downstream near Bon Wier, TX and further downstream near Ruliff, TX. To the east in watershed Region 4, Calcasieu River continues to flood a foot and nine inches over near Glenmora with the flow level downstream near Kinder just a fraction of an inch above flood stage, this flooding likely ended during this report, more to follow.
As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.
USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
