Ocmulgee flooding ends overnight
Altamaha, Savannah flood on

Water news for Wednesday, March 20, 2024 updated 159 pm EDT

Streamflow Situation provisional data from USGS current streamflow monitors
Below normal streamflows are creeping back in to north and central Georgia midweek, replacing seasonal normal ratings. As of the afternoon update, eight monitors remain in flood stage in the state of Georgia, all in the south on the Atlantic side of the drainage divide.

Ocmulgee River flooding ended around 445 am this morning at Lumber City. Ohoopee is now also out of flood stage near Reidsville, currently running a fraction of an inch under. Altamaha River is still flooding near Charlotteville, almost five feet over. Flooding near Baxley is more than five and a half feet above the channel. Ohoopee River flooding has ended near Reidsville, is tapering off as of this report, running a shade above flood stage and leveling out. Altamaha River is a foot and four inches over at Doctortown and a foot and two inches over near Everett City. Savannah River is still flooding at Burtons Ferry Rd, running a foot and a half over near Millhaven and three feet over downstream near Cylo. Ogeechee River flow is down an inch today, dropping steadily. As of this update, flow near Eden is three inches over, expect to see this spot out of flood stage by the end of the day today. Satilla River is likewise three inches over flood stage at Atkinson, just beginning to recede. No extreme low flows are recorded as of this report.

Flooding in the USA provisional data from USGS streamflow monitors

Twenty-one stream gauges record flood stage in continental USA Wednesday afternoon, down from twenty-four this morning.

WT tracks flooding and drinking water quality in four states. As of this report, no flooding is reported in the networks in New York or Ohio.

Heavy rains through north and central Georgia beginning March 6 set creeks and rivers overflowing. As of this update, four major rivers continue to flood in the south, as recorded on eight USGS streamflow monitors. Ocmulgee River flooding ended overnight, Ohoopee River is nearing the end of flooding midmorning Wednesday, Ogeechee and Satilla are currently three to four inches over flood stage. Altamaha and Savannah remain well above flood stage.

Louisiana added fourth river flood overnight, up from three yesterday. Sabine River got out of the channel near Ruliff, TX between 8 and 9 pm last night, currently running a fraction of an inch over flood stage at ten thousand cubic feet per second. This latest round of flooding in LA kicked up March 17 when heavy rains hit southern Arkansas, Texas and north central Louisiana. Bayou Dorcheat is flooding near Springhill and downstream Minden, Bayou Bodcau is over near Shreveport, Pearl River is roaming out of the channel near Bogalusa and downstream station called Pearl River.

Drinking Water Advisories
Clarkesville issued a BWA last week Thursday for several neighborhoods downtown. Customers connecting at Habersham Place, Springwood, and Madison from Wayne to Llewellyn St are to boil water until further notice.
