HAPPENING NOW
Normal streamflows in north and central Georgia
Satilla River flooding at Atkinson

Water news for Monday, March 18, 2024 updated 1104 am EDT

Streamflow Situation provisional data from USGS current streamflow monitors
Normal streamflows occurring in north and central Georgia Monday morning as eleven monitors continue to record flooding in the south, including a new flood, Satilla River at Atkinson.

Flint River tucked in under flood stage while we write, running a hair under at Bainbridge Monday, ending the floodwaters moving toward the Gulf of Mexico via Apalachicola River exiting the continental basin on the Florida coast.

Flooding on the Atlantic basin side of the state divide continues on Monday, draining the last surplus surface water runoff from last week's heavy rains through the main channels down south. Oconee River is back in its box Monday, flooding ended at Mount Vernon Sunday mid-afternoon. Ocmulgee River still runs seven inches over flood stage near Abbeville, a foot and seven inches over at Lumber City. Altamaha River still runs over near Charlotteville and Baxley. Downstream from Baxley, the Ohoopee River throws in to supply Altamaha flood effects further downstream. Ohoopee River runs nine inches over flood stage near Reidsville, contributing 3000 cubic feet of black water per second into the Altamaha, still flooding at Doctortown and near Everett City.

Savannah River is still flooding at Burtons Ferry Road near Millhaven, and downstream near Cylo. Ogeechee River continues to supply floodwater to Savannah River, measured above flood stage at Eden. Little Satilla River is no longer flooding near Offerman, the flood baton passed to Satilla River, flood stage breached at midnight last night, currently running an inch out of the box at total volume of 5400 cubic feet per second at Atkinson.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels updated throughout the day, blue tags for high flow.

Flooding in the USA provisional data from USGS streamflow monitors

Thirty-three sites mark flooding across the network of the USGS streamflow monitors in continental USA Monday morning, down from forty-three this time Sunday.

WT is tracks flooding and drinking water quality in four states. A single station recording coastal flooding in NY over the weekend, Reynolds Channel at Point Lookout is this morning presumed to be a technical error, more to follow.

Tiffin River flooding subsided at Stryker in northwest Ohio around 9 pm last night, back in the channel less than 24 hours after flooding began. (Correction notice: Tiffin River flood earlier reported ending at 11 pm Sunday, March 17.) Tiffin River is part of the Maumee watershed, the principal region of interest for nutrient runoff feeding the Lake Erie HAB. More to follow as we track precipitation and streamflows through the critical spring season on the tenth anniversary of the Toledo water crisis.

Four stations record flooding in Louisiana Monday morning, including Bayou Dorcheat near Springhill, Bayou Bodcau near Shreveport in the northwest and Pearl River flooding near Bogalusa and downstream municipality of Pearl River along the east state line.

Georgia is the flood leader again today, accounting for as much as half of the active flooding in the USA over the weekend, down to eleven monitors still recording flooding Monday. The current flooding event in GA began on March 6 caused by heavy rain through north and central Georgia. Major rivers still flooding Monday include the Ocmulgee, Altamaha, Satilla, Savannah, Ogeechee and, Ohoopee Rivers, all heading for the Atlantic Ocean. Refer to black tags on the maps for updated flood flow levels, blue tags for 99th percentile high flows.
