Altamaha flooding at Doctortown

Water news for Thursday, March 14, 2024 1215 pm EDT

Streamflow Situation provisional data from USGS current streamflow monitors
Twenty-one streamflow monitors record active flooding Thursday, down from twenty-five Wednesday night.

In the Atlantic basin, Altamaha River breached flood stage at Doctortown right around 9 pm last night. So far, so good downstream, the Altamaha is still a foot below flood stage through Everett City. With the combined flows of the Oconee and Ocmulgee Rivers pumping 42000 cubic feet per second at Doctortown, Everett City may be readying for flood coming shortly.

In the Mississippi basin, the Flint River and its lower end tributaries continue to roar Thursday, running 99th percentile volumes from central GA26 near Montezuma, down past Oakfield and Albany, flooding from Newton down to Lake Seminole.

The Flint initially spilled over at its top end, recorded in flood stage near Lovejoy just after 6pm March 6, followed by Woolsey just past midnight of Mar 7, and next on downstream Griffin, March 7 just past the noon hour. The glut of rainstorm runoff moved out of the top end creeks and streams down the Flint River channel and proceeded to flood Carsonville just past midnight March 10. Today, a week and a day after it began, flood water spills out of the lower Flint channel from Newton to Lake Seminole, where the flow mixes and merges with the Chattahoochee River and tributaries including Spring Creek. Out of Lake Seminole, the Apalachicola runs just under 100 thousand cubic feet per second, presently overwhelming the channel through Chattahoochee, Florida.

Atlantic flow Ocmulgee River continues to flood at Hawkinsville and Abbeville, joined by the Oconee River flooding from Dublin through Mount Vernon, The combined flow Altamaha runs over flood stage near Charlotteville and Baxley. As reported above, Altamaha is actively flooding at Doctortown, downstream. Expect to see Everett City appearing here soon.

Ogeechee River continues to flood at Eden, Ohoopee River is still flooding at Reidsville, Canoochee River floods on at Claxton, Little Satilla River is flooding near Offerman.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels updated throughout the day, blue tags for high flow.
