NWS: Fire and flood
Flood Wise Drivers, flood smart autos

Water news for Tuesday, March 12, 2024 1034 am EDT

National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 846 am March 12
This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of North and Central Georgia.

A Fire Danger Statement is in effect through 8 PM this evening due to low relative humidities and dry fuels. Please use caution and check with local authorities before attempting any burns.

Portions of the Ocmulgee, Oconee, Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers remain in flood across central Georgia. Please use caution around flooded areas, and do not drive through any flooded roadways.

Periods of thunderstorm activity are forecast in the region between Thursday night and Monday. There is still uncertainty regarding strength of any storms on Friday, so WTGA.us will continue to check the forecast and update here as the situation develops.

Flood wise driving, flood smart autos
The nation's most common natural disaster has landed hard on Georgia this year. A full one third of flood events recorded in the continental USA are happening right now, right here, twenty-three monitors currently registering active flooding as of this report.

Looking to the emergency preparedness and public safety advice offered by the National Weather Service, FEMA and CDC, the main flood safety messaging is aimed at drivers.

Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
"Never drive through flooded areas. As little as six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle." - Centres for Disease Control (CDC)
According to the CDC, "flooding causes more deaths than any other hazard related to thunderstorms. The most common flood deaths occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood waters."

How can a driver confronted with water flowing across the roadway know how deep the floodwater is? What happens when a vehicle's electrical system shuts down? WTGA.us asked auto manufacturers around the world about flood safety measures built in to their vehicles. Watch here for the responses as we find out which new cars rolling off the line in 2024 come equipped with live saving flood safety measures. More to follow.

Streamflow Situation provisional data from USGS current streamflow monitors
Twenty-three streamflow monitors record active flooding Tuesday.

Chattahoochee River ceased flooding overnight at Columbus, Fort Gaines and Columbia, AL. Flint River flooding has ended at Griffin and Carsonville, now flooding downstream at Albany and on into Apalachicola River at Chattahoochee, FL.

On the Atlantic basin side of the state divide, the Ocmulgee River ceased flooding at Macon, continues to flood at Hawkinsville and Abbeville. Oconee River ceased flooding near Penfield, continues to flood near Oconee and Dublin. Past the union of these rivers, the Altamaha River continues to flood near Charlotteville and Baxley. Ogeechee River continues to flood at Midville and Eden, Savannah River overflows near Cylo, Ohoopee River is still flooding at Reidsville, Canoochee River floods on at Claxton.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels updated throughout the day, blue tags for high flow.

Drinking Water Advisories
The Waleska Water Authority issued a boil water advisory for the Silver Creek subdivision near Canton due to low pressure last week Thursday.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
