NWS: Flash flood
Alcovy River flooding below Covington

Water news for Friday, March 8, 2024 updated 433 pm EST

National Weather Service Flood Watch issued 204 pm March 8
FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM EST THIS EVENING THROUGH LATE SATURDAY NIGHT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A storm system will produce moderate to heavy rainfall in the region between Friday night and Saturday night. Rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible. This rainfall combined with saturated soil conditions will likely produce areas of flooding and flash flooding.


Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.


Impacting Portions of central, east central, north central, northeast, northwest, and west central Georgia, including the following areas, in central Georgia, Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Butts, Crawford, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Houston, Jasper, Jones, Laurens, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, Twiggs, Wilcox and Wilkinson. In east central Georgia, Glascock, Greene, Hancock, Jefferson, Johnson, Taliaferro, Warren, Washington and Wilkes. In north central Georgia, Barrow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Fayette, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Lumpkin, Morgan, Newton, North Fulton, Pickens, Rockdale, South Fulton, Union and Walton. In northeast Georgia, Banks, Clarke, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Towns and White. In northwest Georgia, Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker and Whitfield. In west central Georgia, Chattahoochee, Coweta, Harris, Heard, Lamar, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Pike, Schley, Spalding, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson and Webster Counties

Drinking Water Advisories
The Waleska Water Authority issued a boil water advisory for the Silver Creek subdivision near Canton due to low pressure yesterday.

Streamflow Situation from USGS current streamflow monitors
Five gauges record active flooding in central Georgia late Friday afternoon. Flint River flooding has ceased at Griffin, ending all flooding at USGS monitored locations on the Flint system. Ocmulgee River is still running close to five feet over flood stage at Macon, Oconee River a foot and a half over at Penfield and five inches over at Avant Mine near Oconee. Ohoopee River continues to run more than a foot over at Reidsville and as of late afternoon Friday. As of noon Friday, the Alcovy River is flooding below Covington, running two inches over flood stage. Alcovy River is flowing at 99th percentile above Covington on a declining trend.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels updated throughout the day, blue tags for high flow.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
All area of central Georgia are cleared from the drought map Friday. Lower Flint and Ochlockonee River watersheds remain below normal.
