8 streamflow gauges record flooding around Atlanta

Water news for Wednesday, March 6, 2024 updated 307 pm EST

National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 325 am March 6
Localized flooding may occur over portions of northern Georgia this morning, with minor river flooding lingering through the day in the faster responding river basins. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected in central Georgia this afternoon. While severe weather is not anticipated at this time, a couple of stronger storms can`t be ruled out.

Streamflow Situation from USGS current streamflow monitors
Fourteen gauges indicated flooding Wednesday morning down to 8 remaining around Atlanta by midafternoon. Chattahoochee River is flooding at US41 in Atlanta, Big Creek is flooding at Alpharetta and Cumming, South River is flooding at Klondike Rd near Lithonia.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels updated throughout the day.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
Tennessee River watershed Dade, Walker and Catoosa and Tallapoosa River watershed's Carroll and Haralson Counties remain below normal for the Mississippi basin in north Georgia midweek. Lower Chattahoochee is off the drought map Wednesday. Lower Flint and Ochlockonee River watersheds remain below normal.

On the Atlantic side of the state divide, Lower Ocmulgee River watershed remains in extreme drought in south Laurens, east Dodge, west Wheeler and north Telfair. Savannah River watershed Columbia County, Richmond, Burke and Screven remain below normal, along with Ogeechee River watershed south Taliaferro and extending down to north Emanual and north Jenkins Counties.

Drinking Water Advisories
Sea Island's Midway Square is under a boil water advisory following a broken water main over the weekend. The Sea Island Company community water system serves a residential population of 1859 from a groundwater source.
