NWS: Thunderstorms until Wed
Ocmulgee watershed goes to extreme drought

Water news for Tuesday, March 5, 2024 919 am EST

National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 328 am March 5
Patchy dense fog advisory has passed as of 9am, visibility less than a quarter mile in east central Georgia.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of North and Central Georgia. Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the region today. Severe weather is not expected today. Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will conclude by Wednesday afternoon. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected.

Widespread rainfall and scattered thunderstorms are expected Friday and Saturday. Heavy rainfall could lead to flooding Friday or Saturday.

Streamflow Situation from USGS current streamflow monitors
Streamflows are normal across the north shifting to much above normal in central Georgia Tuesday with thunderstorms expected to deliver 1-2 inches of rainfall by Wedesday afternoon. So far there are no monitors recording extreme high flows. More rain is forecast for Friday with a possibility of flooding. More to follow.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
Lower Ocmulgee River watershed escalated past the severe rating straight to extreme drought in south Laurens, east Dodge, west Wheeler and north Telfair overnight.

Tennessee River watershed Dade, Walker and Catoosa remain below normal for the Mississippi basin in north Georgia Tuesday, along with Tallapoosa River watershed's Carroll and Haralson Counties also rated below normal. Lower Chattahoochee, Lower Flint and Ochlockonee River watersheds are below normal again Tuesday throttling the fresh water supply downstream in the Mississippi basin.

On the Atlantic side of the state divide, Ocmulgee area rated moderate drought yesterday is now rated extreme. Savannah River watershed Columbia County, Richmond, Burke and Screven remain below normal, along with Ogeechee River watershed south Taliaferro and extending down to north Emanual and north Jenkins Counties.

Drinking Water Advisories
Sea Island's Midway Square is under a boil water advisory following a broken water main over the weekend. The Sea Island Company community water system serves a residential population of 1859 from a groundwater source.
