Remembering East Palestine, Ohio hazardous materials spill and fire Feb 3, 2023

As long as hazardous materials are in demand and in use for the products we need, common carriers will be required to move these goods through populated areas. How do the carriers manage risk of transporting hazardous materials? How is the track infrastructure maintained for safety? How do the transport laws, inspections and enforcement keep the population and the environment as safe as possible, preventing accidents? What is the safety record of the rail inftrastructure? Stay with us as we bring responses from the transport industry and those enforcing the RCRA Act. More to follow.

Join the discussion, what are your concerns about the transport of dangerous goods? Email info@wtga.us, your questions and comments may be in the next update.

Streamflow situation based on provisional data from USGS streamflow gauges in the rivers and creeks of Georgia
With NWS warning of rain, saturated ground and potential flooding today southeast of Macon, currrent streamflows registering on the network of USGS equipment through both sides of the drainage divide in Georgia remains normal with increasing below normal ratings.

Watch for updates here, more to follow.

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow compared with historic average
The drought map has been in a holding pattern, Ocmulgee River watershed unchanged with an area the same area, south Laurens, east Dodge, west Wheeler and north Telfair below normal, this may take a day or two to change after the rain starts again.

Ogeechee watershed remains as seen Thursday, rated below normal from Taliaferro, east Hancock and west Warren, east Washington, Glascock, Jefferson, southwest Burke, north Emanuel and north Jenkins Counties.

For the Mississippi Basin, the southwest corner of Thomas County in the Ochlockonee watershed remains below normal Saturday.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.
