Streamflows up in Central GA
Oconee River flooding at Penfield

Sunday, January 28, 2024 - last updated 1110 pm EST

Flood and streamflow report
USGS Streamflow gauges - see Provisional Data Statement below
Oconee River breached flood stage again at Penfield just before 10 pm tonight. This location was flooding on Jan 26 also. Streamflows through the central Atlantic drainage area have increased over the last six hours, Ocmulgee River had almost stopped flooding earlier today at Macon, has now picked up volume and running six inches over flood stage.

Broad River is on the decline above Carlton, peaking in action stage earlier this afternoon. The current trend is downward and at the time of this update, out of action stage.

Alcovy River is flowing 99th percentile above Covington, in action stage and on a slow rising trend. We will be watching for this station to flood overnight.

See black tags on the map for flood flow details, blue tags for flows above 99th percentile.

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Streamflows in the northwest run normal to above normal Saturday. In the northeast flows are much above normal. South on the Mississippi side, streamflows are much above normal, shifting to normal levels as the rivers and tributaries flow southward.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow compared with historic average
The area rated below normal on the Mississippi side of the drainage divide expands Sunday, a larger portion of Lower Flint River watershed coming back on the drought radar, beginning at Marion-Schley-Macon down to Decatur County.

On the Atlantic side of the divide, Lower Ocmulgee River watershed remains rated below normal at south Laurens, east Dodge, west Wheeler and north Telfair.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.
