HAPPENING NOW
NWS: Thunderstorms and heavy rain continue north and central GA
Creek flooding north of Atlanta

Thursday, January 25, 2024 - last updated 808 pm EST

National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 231 pm Jan 25, 2024

Showers and isolated embedded thunderstorms are expected to continue into the evening. Some storms along the Alabama/Georgia border may become strong to marginally severe and capable of producing gusty to damaging winds. Precipitation will be widespread and heavy at times across the area with some areal and river flooding expected. A Flood Watch is in effect through 7PM Saturday, and a Slight (2/4) Risk for Excessive Rainfall is in effect for the northwestern two-thirds of the forecast area, roughly along and north of a line extending from Columbus to Athens.

Periods of heavy rainfall and isolated to scattered thunderstorms will continue through Saturday. A Slight (2/5) Risk for severe thunderstorms is in effect for portions of southwest central Georgia near the state line on Saturday, and much of north Georgia is under a Slight (2/4) Risk for Excessive Rainfall. Isolated damaging wind gusts are possible along the leading edge of a broken line of storms. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4.5 inches are forecasted across much of north and central Georgia with localized higher amounts possible. This could result in further flooding of rivers, creeks, and streams, as well as other low-lying or flood-prone areas. The Flood Watch expires at 7 PM on Saturday.

Flood and streamflow report
USGS Streamflow gauges - see Provisional Data Statement below
Big Creek began flooding around 3 am at GA9 near Cumming, by 4 am spilled over the channel at Alpharetta. Big Creek is flowing half a foot over flood stage and rising as of this update.

Altamaha River has stopped flooding at Baxley.

See black tags on the map for flood flow details, blue tags for flows above 99th percentile.
Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Streamflows in the northwest are rated normal to much above normal with fewer stations recording below seasonal normal Thursday. Mississippi basin flows around Atlanta are above normal, changing to below normal levels in Lower Chattahoochee and Lower Flint River watersheds.

On the Atlantic side, Savannah River and tributaries are flowing above normal in the northeast, with below normal to normal ratings in central and southeast GA. There are no extreme low flows as of this update.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow compared with historic average
Chattahoochee River watershed has gone entirely below normal overnight, along with the majority of Flint River watershed. Tallapoosa and Tennessee River watersheds are below normal overnight, Coosa River watershed Whitfield and Murray have stepped up to moderate drought rating overnight. Rain in the area and in the forecast is likely to shift these drought ratings over the next few days.

On the Atlantic side of the state divide, Lower Ocmulgee River watershed area rated below normal again Thursday from south Laurens, east Dodge, west Wheeler and north Telfair. The remaining area of Atlantic basin is not rated on the drought map as of this update.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Permanent advisories remain in effect for bacterial contamination at Jekyll Clam Creek Beach on the north end of Jekyll Island and St Andrews Beach on the south end. Lab tests processed at Brunswick on samples collected Tuesday January 2, 2024 show the enterococcus levels below the health advisory threshold.
