NWS: Arctic air mass, wind chill and high fire danger today
Altamaha, Satilla Rivers continue flooding

An Arctic airmass has ushered in very cold temperatures to the region this morning. Wind chills in the -5 to 5 degree range are anticipated through noon. A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for portions of north and central Georgia where wind chill values will be the coldest.

HIGH FIRE DANGER CONDITIONS THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING FOR PARTS OF NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA DUE TO LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITIES... Relative Humidities of 25 percent or less can be expected for 4 or more hours this afternoon into the evening. Winds will be northwest at 10 to 15 mph. With dry fuels, high fire danger conditions can be expected. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn outside, use extreme caution.

Tomorrow, Sunday...the Arctic airmass will linger over the region through Sunday. Hazardous wind chills will return Saturday night and Sunday morning as values fall back into the single digits (C). A Wind Chill Advisory is in place Tonight through Sunday morning.

Precipitation begins to move back into the area Tuesday with afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected Wednesday through Friday.

Flooding has ended at Abbeville, Mount Vernon, Offerman and MacClenny FL as the Ocmulgee, Oconee, Little Satilla and St Marys Rivers retreat back into their channels.

Three locations still indicate active flooding Saturday morning, Altamaha River is still overflowing near Charlotteville and at Baxley station, and Satilla River is still nine to ten inches over flood stage at Atkinson.

HABs update from Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Coastal Resources Division Shellfish and Water Quality Unit

Permanent advisories remain in effect for bacterial contamination at Jekyll Clam Creek Beach on the north end of Jekyll Island and St Andrews Beach on the south end. Lab tests processed at Brunswick on samples collected Tuesday January 2, 2024 show the enterococcus levels below the health advisory threshold. Clam Creek Beach came in at 4 cfu per 100 ml and 9 cfu per 100 ml for St Andrews.

Drinking Water Advisories
Marietta BWA - According to the City of Marietta, finished water is purchased from the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA), a regional public utility founded in 1951. There are two water sources which supply CCMWA treatment facilities, the Chattahoochee River and Lake Allatoona. Cobb County has experienced a service outage and low pressure in the southwest. From Georgia Drinking Water Watch, Cobb County serves 695000 customers.
