HAPPENING NOW
Rain north of I20, snow and sleet for the north
Savannah River watershed back on the drought map

Wednesday, January 3, 2024 - last updated 209 pm EST

National Weather Service Hazardous weather outlook 940 am January 3, 2024
Light rain showers will overspread the area by mid afternoon as an area of low pressure tracks along the Gulf coast. There could be some sleet mixed in with the rain at the onset of this precipitation, especially north of I-20, but no major impacts are expected as temperatures will be above freezing.

Across the higher elevations of north Georgia, a better chance of seeing a wintry mix of rain, sleet, or snow is possible through this evening, but precipitation is expected to very light. If any snow or sleet accumulations do occur in the mountains, amounts will be less than 1/2 inch.

Streamflow situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
Three extreme low flows are registering on USGS monitors in central Georgia by Wednesday afternoon. Flint River is flowing low near Thomaston and tributary Kinchafoonee Creek is low near Dawson. Tobsofkee Creek is back on the low list overnight, flowing low near Macon.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow compared with historic average
Savannah River watershed has popped back on the drought map Wednesday with a section starting in Wilkes and Lincoln Counties, extending south Taliaferro, north Warren and north McDuffie Counties rated below normal.

Below normal rated area has expanded on the Mississippi-Gulf side of the state divide mid-week. Coosa River watershed in the northwest is back on the drought map this morning including Whitfied and Murray Counties, Catoosa, south central Walker, Floys and Polk Counties joining league with Gilmer, all of Gordon and west Pickens Counties.

The entire Flint River and Lower Chattahoochee River watersheds are today rated mostly below normal from south Fulton-Clayton County to the south state line. Flint River's south Marion, Schley, west Sumter, Lee and northeast Terrell Counties are rated moderate drought. Most of Seminole County, Miller and east Early are unrated on the drought map, indicating a 7-day average at or above the seasonal normal level.

For the Atlantic drainage basin, the Lower Ocmulgee River watershed continues below normal including south Macon, Peach, Houston, Twiggs, Bleckley, Pulaski, Wilcox, Ben Hill and Telfair Counties.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Hazardous Spills files released from Georgia Department of Environmental Conservation

A large wastewater spill impacting state water incident has been investigated with details released by EPD. The spill occurred Dec 21 in Whitfield County, over 13500 gallons spilled from a Wastewater Treatment Plant on Frontier Trail in Dalton reached Stonebranch Creek. Noted Coosa River watershed has been experiencing low flow levels, rated below normal on the drought map.
