HAPPENING NOW
Satilla River flooding nearly over at Atkinson
St Marys River no longer flooding

Monday, January 1, 2024 - last updated 1016 am EST

Streamflow situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
St Marys River flooding has ended overnight, no longer flowing above flood stage at Folkston for the first time since December 17. Satilla River flow level continues to decline at Atkinson, a fraction of an inch above flood stage as of this update.

Current rated streamflows are below normal to much below normal through the Mississippi drainage basin west of Georgia state divide Monday. Kinchafoonee Creek is flowing low Monday morning at Pinewood Rd near Dawson.
In the Atlantic basin, flows are mostly normal with a dozen stations reporting below normal Monday.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow compared with historic average
North Georgia has cleared off the drought map over the weekend with a very small piece of west central Dade county rated moderate drought.

In the Mississippi River basin, the Lower Flint River and Lower Chattahoochee River watersheds are rated below normal immediately south of Taylor County, Muscogee, Marion and Schley Counties to the south state border. An area of Lower Flint is rated moderate drought including much of Terrell, Lee, Dougherty and west Baker Counties.

For the Atlantic drainage basin, the Lower Ocmulgee River watershed shows up below normal from Macon, Peach, Houston, Twiggs, Bleckley, Pulaski, Wilcox, Ben Hill and Telfair Counties Monday.
USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.
