HAPPENING NOW
Fire Danger "Near Critical"
Satilla, Alabaha, St Marys Rivers still flooding

Thursday, December 21, 2023 - last updated 747 pm EST

National Weather Service warning statement 4 am December 21, 2023
A Fire Danger Statement is in effect through 7 PM for much of North and Central Georgia due to low relative humidity. Please consult with local authorities first before attempting any burns. Low relative humidity and the ongoing drought could combine to produce near critical fire weather conditions on Friday.

Streamflow situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
The same six gauges recording flooding Wednesday are still flooding Thursday. As of this update, Satilla River and tributaries Alabaha and Little Satilla River are still flooding. St Marys's River is still flooding along the GA-FL line, two feet deeper at Folkston in the last 24 hours, still rising and heading for moderate flood stage. St Marys River is flooding at MacClenny and North Prong St Marys River is still flooding at Moniac. See black location tags on the map for details.

Real-time stream flow gauges are recording low flows at two stations on the Flint River Thursday, including Thomaston and Albany. The north has one low station Mill Creek at Crandall and the controlled release on the Chattahoochee River is measured low above Roswell. Extreme fire danger warning extends for the third day after high wind and drought conditions combined with low relative humidities creat "near critical" fire danger for Friday.

Drought Map USGS Waterwatch
Drought steps up on the west border from Dade to Harris County, escalating from below normal to moderate overnight. The Mississippi basin takes another hit with this rating, including the Upper Coosa River watershed which lit the moderate drought rating at Whitfield, Murray, Gordon and Gilmer Counties. The lower Coosa watershed Walker, Chattooga, Floyd and Polk County remain below normal. Tallapoosa River watershed is captured in the swatch of moderate drought. Tennessee River watersheds east and west regions are below normal, Upper Chattahoochee River watershed is rated below normal from headwaters at Union County into south Fulton where the rating jumps up to moderate drought and runs down to northwest Muscogee County. Flint River watershed below normal area extends further south on Thursday with a low flow registering at Thomaston and Albany gauges.

In the Atlantic basin, Upper Savannah River remains at the moderate hydrologic drought from Rabun to north Hart County. The area from Hart south including Banks, Madison and Oglethorpe, Elbert, Wilkes and Lincoln are still rated below normal. Ocmulgee River watershed is below normal from Rockdale, Newton and Henry Counties to Bibb County.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Hazardous Spills files released from Georgia Department of Environmental Conservation

A tractor trailer tank is reported ruptured on the highway spilling 100 gallons of diesel near Lawrence in Dekalb County. Responders applied an absorbent product to clean up the spill. A spill of 15000 gallons of sewage is reported spilled on Kenora Drive in Atlanta with no cause reported. More to follow.

HABs update from Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Coastal Resources Division Shellfish and Water Quality Unit

Two permanent beach advisories remain in effect on Jekyll Island including Jekyll Clam Creek Beach on the north end and St Andrews Beach on the south end. Lab tests on October 16 samples show the enterococcus bacteria levels below the health advisory threshold. Clam Creek Beach came in at 20 cfu per 100 ml and 7 cfu per 100 ml for St Andrews.

Public notification of the location of harmful algal blooms helps to protect pets, swimmers and waders from venturing into areas with known HABs and helps recreational water users find clear access points on state water bodies. Observations of HABs can be reported here by email, info@wtga.us for public notification on our map and through SMS alerts. The identity of the reporting party is not included in our notifications. Include a photo and location geo-tag so that the bloom can be accurately placed on the map and confirmed by local authorities.

Drinking Water Advisories
Cleveland BWA remains in effect for connections on the west side of Jackson St, Colonial Dr, West Jarrard St, North Bell St to West Kytle St to the intersection of West Underwood St and ABC Dr until further notice.

Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
