HAPPENING NOW
Drought area shrinking
Demorest BWA

Wednesday, December 13, 2023 - last updated 1034 am EST

Drinking Water Advisories
Demorest issued a BWA following a water main break near Old Cleveland Rd Monday. The boil water order applies to customers connecting from Old Athens Highway to Pea Ridge Road until further notice.

Brunswick residents remain under BWA after scheduled work to relocate storm drains. Tallulah Falls BWA for Hickory Nut Mountain and Gorge View remains in effect.

Streamflows situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
Real-time stream flow gauges are sending a mix of normal and below normal flow values from the area north of the state divide Wednesday. Central state flows on both sides of the divide are mostly normal. As of this update, there are no extreme high or extreme low streamflows to report, and no active flooding.

Drought Map USGS Waterwatch
All areas previously rated with some degree of hydrologic drought in Georgia were back to normal or below normal rating by Monday. The total area left on the map Wednesday is rated below normal. Tallapoosa River watershed in the Mississippi River basin has dropped off the drought map Wednesday, along with the lower Ocmulgee River watershed on the Atlantic side of the divide.

On the Mississippi side of the divide, the Coosa River watershed area rated below normal is down to Chattooga, Floyd, Polk, Bartow, Cherokee and Dawson, northern parts of Paulding and Cobb. The area of the Flint River watershed remaining below normal begins at Marion, Schley and Macon Counties and extends down to the south border. The lower Chattahoochee River watershed has jumped back on to the drought map Wednesday including Clay, Early and Seminole Counties.

On the Atlantic basin side of the divide, Savannah River watershed area rated below normal Wednesday appears as yesterday, including Banks, Franklin, Madison and East Oglethorpe Counties, picking up again at south McDuffie and south Columbia Counties and running below normal down to Effingham County. Altamaha River watershed remains on the map at below normal.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Hazardous Spills files released from Georgia Department of Environmental Conservation

Georgia EPD recorded a public complaint regarding water flow to VFW Pond impacted with corroded and broken pipes. The location of the complaint being investigated is recorded as Lower River Rd in Hawkinsville, Pulaski County in the Ocmulgee River watershed. More to follow.

HABs update from Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Coastal Resources Division Shellfish and Water Quality Unit

Two permanent beach advisories remain in effect on Jekyll Island including Jekyll Clam Creek Beach on the north end and St Andrews Beach on the south end. Lab tests on October 16 samples show the enterococcus bacteria levels below the health advisory threshold. Clam Creek Beach came in at 20 cfu per 100 ml and 7 cfu per 100 ml for St Andrews.

Public notification of the location of harmful algal blooms helps to protect pets, swimmers and waders from venturing into areas with known HABs and helps recreational water users find clear access points on state water bodies. Observations of HABs can be reported here by email, info@wtga.us for public notification on our map and through SMS alerts. The identity of the reporting party is not included in our notifications. Include a photo and location geo-tag so that the bloom can be accurately placed on the map and confirmed by local authorities.
