HAPPENING NOW
Back to seasonal normal streamflows
Brunswick BWA

Tuesday, December 12, 2023 - last updated 401 pm EST

Drinking Water Advisories
Demorest has issued a BWA following a water main break near Old Cleveland Rd yesterday. The boil water order applies to customers connecting from Old Athens Highway to Pea Ridge Road until further notice.

Brunswick residents are under a BWA Tuesday following a water service outage Monday. Crews worked through the planned outage to relocate a number of storm drains. All customers impacted by the outage are under boil water order until potable water test confirms the safety. More to follow.

Tallulah Falls BWA for Hickory Nut Mountain and Gorge View remains in effect Tuesday.

Streamflows situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
Flows in the north are finally back to normal with no more hydrologic drought areas remaining in Georgia after the weekend. As of this update, there are no extreme high or low streamflows to report, and no active flooding.

Drought Map USGS Waterwatch
All areas previously rated with some degree of hydrologic drought in Georgia were back to normal or below normal rating by Monday following widespread rains over the weekend. As of this update Tuesday, current streamflow monitors are recording mostly normal flows on both sides of the state divide and the drought map is changing accordingly, no hydrologic drought area in Georgia and the total area below normal is declining.

Toward the Mississippi River basin, the Upper Coosa River watershed Whitfield and Murray Counties are off the drought map Tuesday. This area has previously been rated moderate to severe drought for months on end in 2023. Lower Coosa River watershed remains below normal, as does Tallapoosa River watershed. The east side of Flint River watershed sticks on the drought map Tuesday at below normal rating.

On the Atlantic basin side of the divide, Savannah River watershed area left rated below normal Tuesday includes Banks, Franklin, Madison and East Oglethorpe Counties. Lower Savannah River watershed picks up with a below normal rating at south McDuffie and south Columbia Counties to Effingham County. The Lower Ocmulgee (editors note of correction: earlier reported as Lower Oconee) and Altamaha River watersheds remain on the map at below normal Tuesday.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Hazardous Spills files released from Georgia Department of Environmental Conservation - updates in progress

An unknown amount of sewage is reported overflowing nightly from a sewage clean-out pipe three feet from the complainant's residential property in Wadley, in Jefferson County. The incident report states the city has been called and has cleared the clean out pipe. The investigator notes responsibility lies with the property owner to maintain the clean-out.

Concerning a location in the Ochlockonee River watershed, a report was called in to Georgia EPD about an unnamed pond in Moutrie, Colquitt County turning black. The report indicates the pond is used for irrigation, that a black residue is left behind after irrigating. The report See the Spills button to the right of the map for a list of spill incidents reported to EPD in Georgia this year.
