HAPPENING NOW
End of drought in Georgia
Planned outage for Brunswick, BWA Monday

Monday, December 11, 2023 - last updated 209 pm EST

Drinking Water Advisories
Brunswick residents take note of a planned water service outage in effect today. Brunswick water customers are advised the water service is currently shut off as work is underway to relocate storm drains. When the work is completed and water service is restored, all customers will be under boil water order until the water is confirmed free of contamination. More to follow.

Mountain City BWA for Cathey Road and McIntosh Lane remains in effect, along with Tallulah Falls BWA for Hickory Nut Mountain and Gorge View.

Streamflows situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
Flows in the north are finally back to normal with no more hydrologic drought areas remaining in Georgia after the weekend.

Drought Map USGS Waterwatch
All areas previously rated with some degree of hydrologic drought in Georgia are back to normal or below normal rating Monday following widespread rains over the weekend.

Toward the Mississippi River basin, the Coosa River watershed is a mix of normal and below normal rating Monday. The hardest hit Whitfield and Murray Counties are still showing on the drought map at below normal. Tallapoosa River watershed in the northwest is still rated below normal. The Chattahoochee River is no longer on the drought map at all, returning to seasonal normal flows from the headwaters in Union County to the southwest state line. A slice of Flint River watershed along the east side has taken on a below normal rating Monday while the adjacent Ochlockonee River watershed is completely absent from the drought map, back to normal.

On the Atlantic basin side of the divide, the deepest drought area all season has been the Upper Savannah River, seen at extreme drought and severe drought for weeks is cleared completely today, indicating a return to normal flow for Rabun to Hart County. The area of Savannah River watershed from Hart County to the outlet at the Atlantic Coast is rated below normal. Oconee and Altamaha River watersheds are showing with a below normal rating this morning. More to follow.

USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Hazardous Spills files released from Georgia Department of Environmental Conservation - updates in progress

An unknown amount of sewage is reported overflowing nightly from a sewage clean-out pipe three feet from the complainant's residential property in Wadley, in Jefferson County. The incident report states the city has been called and has cleared the clean out pipe. The investigator notes responsibility lies with the property owner to maintain the clean-out.

Concerning a location in the Ochlockonee River watershed, a report was called in to Georgia EPD about an unnamed pond in Moutrie, Colquitt County turning black. The report indicates the pond is used for irrigation, that a black residue is left behind after irrigating. The report See the Spills button to the right of the map for a list of spill incidents reported to EPD in Georgia this year.
