HAPPENING NOW
Upper Savannah River watershed severe drought ends
Planned outage for Brunswick, BWA Monday

Friday, December 8, 2023 - last updated 327 pm EST

National Weather Service Winter Weather Preparedness Week wraps up today
Following a week of outreach to raise awareness of winter weather hazards and emergency preparedness measures for winter safety, the promotion wraps up today with resources available here: https://www.weather.gov/safety/winter

Drinking Water Advisories
Brunswick residents take note of a planned water service outage next week. On Monday December 11, Brunswick water customers are advised the water service will be cut off while crews work to relocate storm drains. When the work is completed and water service is restored, all customers will be under boil water order until the water is confirmed free of contamination.

Mountain City BWA for Cathey Road and McIntosh Lane remains in effect, along with Tallulah Falls BWA for Hickory Nut Mountain and Gorge View.

Streamflows situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
Flows in the north remain a mix of below normal to much below normal Thursday with one station reporting a low rating. Nottely River is flowing 1.67 percentile near Blairsville Thursday, running 1.72 feet deep at 42 cubic feet per second.

Drought Map USGS Waterwatch
USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Drought severity relaxed overnight in spite of current streamflows taking a distinct downturn. Watch for a response on the drought map after a couple of days.

As of this update Friday morning, the Upper Savannah River has let go the severe drought rating, dropping down one grade to moderate drought from Rabun to north Hart. A significant area of the Coosa River watershed has also dropped down a degree on the drought severity level, going from moderate drought to below normal. Whitfield and Murray Counties remain moderate drought out of the Coosa River watershed area. Chattahoochee River and Upper Flint River watersheds have backed off from moderate drought to below normal. The lower Chattahoochee from Clay, Early and a strip of west Seminole Counties is back to normal, no longer appearing on the drought map. Lower Flint River watershed has gone from below normal to normal, including the area of Schley and Macon Counties, east Sumter and Lee Counties, catching the west side of Dooley and Crisp and the north half of Worth County.

Atlantic basin's Oconee River watershed including parts of Baldwin, Wilkinson and Laurens Counties are back on the drought map Friday at below normal with an area rated moderate drought adjacent to the west in lower Ocmulgee River watershed, Dodge and Telfair counties. Watch for changes over the weekend as rain is forecast for central Georgia. More to follow.

Hazardous Spills files released from Georgia Department of Environmental Conservation - updates in progress

Chattahoochee River watershed - a motor vehicle incident occurred Nov 28 during refueling on Button Gwinnett Dr in Doraville last week. Responders note 75 gallons of diesel spilled on the pavement and entered the storm drain. Basha Services placed an absorbent boom in storm drain and applied granules to contain the spill and recover as much petroleum possible.

See the Spills button to the right of the map for a list of spill incidents reported to EPD in Georgia this year.
