Planned outage for Brunswick with BWA

Thursday, December 7, 2023 - last updated 429 pm EST

National Weather Service High Fire Danger statement issued 1038 am Thursday

Fire Danger - Low relative humidity is causing a high risk of uncontrolled fire for north and central Georgia into this evening.

For the weekend, isolated thunderstorms will be possible across portions of west-central Georgia Saturday afternoon and evening, followed by isolated to scattered thunderstorms across north and central Georgia on Sunday.

Drinking Water Advisories
Brunswick residents take note of a planned water service outage next week. On Monday December 11, Brunswick water customers are advised the water service will be cut off while crews work to relocate storm drains. When the work is completed and water service is restored, all customers will be under boil water order until the water is confirmed free of contamination.

Mountain City BWA for Cathey Road and McIntosh Lane remains in effect, along with Tallulah Falls BWA for Hickory Nut Mountain and Gorge View.

Streamflows situation from USGS Waterwatch gages throughout Georgia
Flows in the north remain a mix of below normal to much below normal Thursday with one station reporting a low rating. Nottely River is flowing 1.67 percentile near Blairsville Thursday, running 1.72 feet deep at 42 cubic feet per second.

Drought Map USGS Waterwatch
USGS seven-day average streamflows at each monitoring location are rated against the historic average flow volume for this day. Results appear on the drought map, showing surface area with a rating: below normal, moderate drought, severe drought or extreme drought. The drought-rated surface area most often follows watershed lines, the physical topography of drainage and direction of flow of the surface water across the state. The watershed layer on the map shows surface area impacted by streamflows in each drainage area. Turn the directional arrows on to see which way the water flows, along with hazardous spills reported in the area that could have an impact on water quality.

Drought severity has escalated overnight in the Atlantic basin. The lower Ocmulgee River watershed's Dodge and Telfair Counties, south Laurens and west Wheeler are rated moderate drought Thursday.

As of this update, the Upper Savannah River still holds the deepest drought rating at severe, from Rabun to north Hart. The Coosa River and Upper Flint River watersheds of the Mississippi basin are still rated moderate drought Thursday. The majority of the Chattahoochee River watershed is below normal: the upper section from Union County headwaters down to northwest Muscogee County and a lower section including parts of Clay, Early and a strip of west Seminole Counties. Lower Flint River watershed has taken on the below normal tag from Schley and Macon Counties, down to east Sumter and Lee Counties, catching the west side of Dooley and Crisp and the north half of Worth County.

Oconee River watershed including parts of Baldwin, Wilkinson and Laurens Counties are no longer showing on the drought map Thursday. We saw this area rated below normal briefly this week.

Hazardous Spills files released from Georgia Department of Environmental Conservation - updates in progress

Chattahoochee River watershed - a motor vehicle incident occurred Nov 28 during refueling on Button Gwinnett Dr in Doraville last week. Responders note 75 gallons of diesel spilled on the pavement and entered the storm drain. Basha Services placed an absorbent boom in storm drain and applied granules to contain the spill and recover as much petroleum possible.

See the Spills button to the right of the map for a list of spill incidents reported to EPD in Georgia this year.
